Teresa Alonso León has had a remarkable journey that has taken her from her early childhood in Michoacán, Mexico, to becoming a significant figure in the Oregon State House, representing District 22. Born into a family where she was the first to graduate from college, Teresa’s early life was characterized by her family’s move to Oregon when she was just four years old, seeking better opportunities. Her academic pursuits led her to earn a Bachelor’s degree from Western Oregon University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Portland State University.
Before her tenure in the legislature, Teresa was deeply involved in education, working as a High School Equivalency and GED administrator for the Office of Community Colleges and Workforce Development. Her commitment to education extended beyond her professional career, as she dedicated 18 years to helping Oregon students find their path to post-secondary education. Her involvement in local governance began with her role as a city councilor in Woodburn, where she championed inclusivity and accessibility, advocating for the underrepresented communities by organizing council meetings in more accessible locations like local parks and community centers.
Her election to the Oregon House of Representatives was a milestone, not just for her, but for the representation of immigrant Latinas in the state’s legislature. Teresa’s campaigns have been noted for their inclusivity, being conducted in three languages—Spanish, English, and Russian—to ensure wide community engagement. Her policy-making and priorities in the legislature have been deeply influenced by her personal experiences as a woman, an immigrant, and a member of the Purépecha community. She has been an advocate for education, healthcare, equity, and social justice policies, asking critical questions in her committees, particularly in the Education Committee, where she served as Oregon’s first Latina chair.

She has overcome numerous challenges, from her humble beginnings in an immigrant family to making tough financial decisions to serve her community in the state legislature. Her journey reflects a deep commitment to giving back to the community that supported her, driven by a desire to ensure that underrepresented voices are heard at the state level. Her work has not only impacted her immediate community but has also paved the way for future leaders, especially from minority and immigrant backgrounds.
